The current slowing economy needs an extra large dose of stimulus to bring it back on track. Unlike previous slowdowns, this time a 360 degree effort is required to prime the pump and beat the “FUD” factor (Fear Uncertainty Doubt).

The government has to do it’s part and focus on areas like infrastructure and other plan expenditure, the companies have to do their share, improve efficiency and reduce prices, and this time around, we the consumers are also going to have to do our bit, spending a bit more than we are comfortable with, even though we face FUD.

In the aviation sector the government has done a little bit like extending credit periods and partially reducing some taxes on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) , but it needs to bite the bullet… Continue reading

I was recently asked about the possibility of a wingtip strike when landing in a typical light plane like a Cherokee or a Cessna 172. Specifically, I was asked about how far tha aileron control could be deflected without hitting the tarmac when one or both of the main landing gear is on the runway after landing at near stall speeds.

I will admit that I have never tried to hit the runway with my wing tip and I don’t know anyone who has. However, it certainly can be done. Perhaps a better question is: what landing technique will guarantee that the wingtip does not strike the tarmac in a crosswind?

I want to talk about landing techniques in a really strong crosswind before I tackle the issue of wingtip strikes. After… Continue reading

One incident will always stick in my mind. It’s a normal day at work. A ‘call bell’ goes off in row 8. I stop what I’m doing, and proceed to row 8.

“How can I help” I ask.

“I just wanted to know why we have stopped moving?” comes the reply.

“Sorry?!”

“Well, I’ve been watching that cloud for the last ten minutes, and we have not moved”

Yes, I did have a little chuckle about this, but it did confirm to me that nervous passengers will look for any signs of danger - even when they are physically impossible. Of course there is no way an aircraft can just stop moving, and hover at 38,000ft, but this passenger’s fear was controlling her. Normal thought processes go out of the window, as the fear takes… Continue reading

Flight Death Statistics

Dec-21-2008 By travel

South African aviation authorities are bringing new innovative methods to the table in an effort to spare the industry another killer month. The sector got some really bad press in October, with seventeen accidents claiming close on thirty deaths, making it the deadliest month for aviation in South Africa.

‘Killer October’ takes its toll

To put these incomparably high figures into perspective, only 8 accidents were recorded for the full twelve months of last year, but 2006 was regarded as one of the blackest years in aviation as there were over 50 accidents involving light aircrafts.

The Civil Aviation Authority has earmarked factors that are largely responsible for this frightening increase in flight fatalities, with pilot errors and gaping holes in training being the primary culprits. Other contributing factors are

  • Poor pilot attitude -

Leonardo da Vinci originally came up with the concept of flying aircraft many years ago, drawing pictures and blueprints that would later be studied by all manner of aviation experts. The history of aviation begins even earlier than this, however, as there are all manner of paintings, blueprints and diagrams that describe flying machines stretching back into prehistory. Depictions of all manner of different types of aircraft have littered the earth from artists, engineers and just flat-out dreamers who have considered the concept of flying long before the history of aviation ever included the Wright brothers. With the tremendous levels of advancement that have been made over the years, it is clear that there is little doubt on the part of most of the history of aviation’s place in the… Continue reading

Contrails or vapour trails are visible trails of condensed water vapour made by the exhaust of aircraft engines. As the hot exhaust gases cool in the surrounding air they may precipitate a cloud of microscopic water droplets. If the air is cold enough, this trail will comprise tiny ice crystals.

The main products of hydrocarbon fuel combustion are carbon dioxide and water vapour. At high altitudes this water vapour emerges into a cold environment, and the local increase in water vapour can push the water content of the air past saturation point. The vapour then condenses into tiny water droplets and/or deposits into ice. These millions of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals form the vapour trail or contrails.

The grounding of aircrafts for three days in the United States after September… Continue reading

London’s Luton Airport is comfortably among the top ten busiest airports in the United Kingdom. As a major hub for no frills, low cost airlines in Europe, cheap flights from Luton Airport are often more frequent to other UK and European destinations than from other airports in the UK.

Among the low cost carriers at Luton are those that are household names in Europe, including Ryanair and EasyJet. EasyJet’s main hub is Luton Airport. As its main rival Ryanair and other carriers are also at the airport, it is not unusual to find cheap flights from Luton Airport as they are often competitively priced. This is often the case if a new carrier sets up an operation there in direct competition with one of the other airlines. Ryanair has often employed… Continue reading
