Its important to pack correctly when travelling. Planning in advance is best and here are some of the strategies Ive employed based on my experience. Avoid taking too many bags by being well organised. Ensure your luggage is strong and secure. Hard backed luggage is safer secured with a strap and luggage tags that are closed face. Put your essential items in your hand luggage in the event of loss.

Before you leave home scan all important documents and keep them in your email box. This will be of help if you lose them as you can contact the embassy with the scanned copies in order to file for new ones Separate your valuables such as cash, travellers cheques, and credit cards by keeping them in different bags or pockets.

Use small transparent containers to pack toiletries.They can either be repacked in smaller bottles or why not buy the travel sizes that are available in most pharmacies and supermarkets. The smart way of packing is to pack the lighter items at the bottom and the heavier ones on the top as your bag will feel lighter.Place your soiled clothes at the bottom also. Bring along some polythene bags for your toiletries to avoid leakage and also for clothes in need of washing. The zip lock bags are perfect for this.

Its also a good idea pack clothes such as underwear, tops shorts etc. in separate transparent plastic bags so that you have no need to search blindly for anything. If you pack everything in this way you can unpack them easily during the custom checks. Pack only what you use and avoid taking too many clothes, if you are travelling for a long period of time . It is advisable to wash your clothes intermittently and therefore lessen the need to carry more with you .

You can organise your items by using a piece of cardboard to separate your suitcase into sections .This method also helps during airport inspections .Dont forget to take a torch when travelling. Airtight plastic zip lock bags are ideal for putting shoes and soiled socks in as your bag will be free of any unpleasant odours .

Use your carry on bag to keep any medication and important papers. This will be useful on long flights with multiple stopovers. Especially if you flying between major airports. Sometimes your bags tend to get delayed or lost when flying long haul and during the custom inspections.Apply rolling techniques in packing. Some bags will allow more if you roll your clothes instead of folding Use tissue paper when you roll your clothes to avoid them getting wrinkled. Or use the new vacuum storage and compression bags that are widely available now.

Ensure you clarify the liquids policy of your departure airport and your destination airport. Use the 100ml plastic bottles if they are still allowed. If not then tooth powder and bars of shampoo can be taken. If you are able to buy travel size toiletries before you leave so much the better. Final word of warning. Never leave your luggage unattended for a second
