The Last Generation of Manned Warplanes and the Future of Air Combat
The United States new Stealth Fighter will probably would be one of the last fighter planes, or combat aircraft that actually has a pilot inside. The next generation of fighter planes will not need a pilot because they will be run with Tele-robotics, or completely autonomously. This will not only prevent the risking of lives in the battlespace, but it will also allow these aircraft to make it sharper turns, which would normally black-out a human pilot.
The cost savings to create fully autonomous aircraft without the cockpit and all the controls, or all the systems needed for ejection seats, instrumentation, and life support systems will be about a 45% savings, for more. Without the extra weight of all this instrumentation, pilot, and everything involved with putting a human into an airplane, the aircraft can be made smaller, carry more weapons, carry more fuel, have better range, and increase the maneuverability three-fold.
Additionally, it is said that takes over $2 million to train a fighter pilot, half million dollars to transport and feed him, and in the future it can cost $1 million for his retirement and pension. All this money will be saved. The last generation of manned warplanes and the future of air combat is changing because of the UAV, or unmanned aerial vehicle. Things will never be the same again, and because of the cost savings it makes sense for the US military to move forward with these technologies right now.
As the son of a fighter pilot, or Naval Aviator it seems rather sad that the Knights of our skies are no longer needed and they will be replaced with artificially intelligent software running unmanned aerial vehicles. Nevertheless, that is the way it is, that is the way of the future, and it is probably the better way to go for our US military’s need for air superiority. Please consider all this.
