How can you calm passengers on an airliner when the weather is horrific due to ice or heavy storms and you know the flight will be bumpy from turbulence? How can you calm the passengers when their flight has been delayed due to dangerous visibility at the airport?

How can you calm passengers when just last week there was a hijacking that led to disaster? Worse, how can you calm passengers when no more than a week ago there was a plane crash in an aircraft like the one they are flying on and the initial news reports suggest it might have been an aircraft malfunction?

Scary stuff indeed and many passengers are still afraid of flying even though airline travel is one of the safest forms of transportation and per mile traveled it is definitely the safest. Still, there is something about being 30,000 feet in the air flying in a tube that just freaks people out. Much of this FEAR is exactly that; F-E-A-R or False Expectations Appearing Real.

Well, it just so happens that some very innovative and creative stewardesses figured out a way to calm their passengers, and they took a page right out of mom’s cook book. The ordered hot trays of chocolate chip cookies and allowed the aroma to fill the cabin just before take-off. This triggered an automatic psychological response with the passengers.

They felt safe at home with their families or like they did as a kid in anticipating eating those wonderful cookies that mom was backing. It worked. Think about chocolate chip cookies next time you fly!
